In Memoriam: Mike Bliss

At the beginning of this month, Mike Bliss, a beloved member of Kunamokst Lodge, went home. Section G16 honors his life, his service, and the profound impact he had on the Order of the Arrow.

Mike was more than a mentor, he was a guiding force who inspired countless youth and adults to embrace the ideals of the Order of the Arrow with energy, dedication, and integrity. Quick to smile and always ready to have fun, he led by example, whether he was picking up a mop to help with a task or calmly guiding his lodge, section and national officers through challenges. His leadership was steady, humble, and transformative, leaving a mark on everyone who had the privilege to serve with him.

Mike’s influence was far-reaching. He shaped the lives of youth from every corner of the country, helping mold the next generation of servant leaders. First as a youth leader in Southern Oregon then later serving as the inaugural Lodge Adviser to Lo La’Qam Geela Lodge in 1994, later as Section W-1A Adviser (now known as G16), and from 2006 to 2013 as Region Chairman of the Western Region. His dedication was recognized nationally with the Distinguished Service Award in 2009 and the Silver Buffalo Award in 2023.

Generations of leaders recall with deep appreciation how Mike’s guidance and example helped them grow, both in Scouting and in life. His vision, mentorship, and tireless service were pivotal not just to Section G16 but to the Order of the Arrow as a whole—his legacy is woven into the very fabric of the organization.

Mike’s presence and influence remain alive in the hearts and minds of those he inspired. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to shape leaders for years to come.
